(Project 2) Branding possibilities…

Design Team Goals…
Have sketches of logo possibilities
Mind map concepts for Major Month page layouts

Just did some minor concepting for possible branding and other options, such as the concepting for the majors and the relevant joke / concept.

(Project 2) A new start…

We have selected our projects and have now selected our groups as well…  Either working on a kung fu movie, or a calendar.

I decided to go with the calendar if you couldn’t tell.

Below, is my job and the team, or crew that I will primarily be working with.

Design Team
:
Head of Editorial – Mitchell

Illustration/Graphic Designer – John
Illustration/Graphic Designer – Lewis
Stylist/ Designer – Kristen

Goals:Starting concepts month and major relation; potential concept designs and project themes

Goals for Everyone: What are we going to brand ourselves as? Logo Potential? Name for the project?

Think about first 4 concepts and try to include some of the following to help the team visualize

For First Four Concepts Post:

·        At least one reference photo for each pitch

·        Consider color palettes

·        Basic composition/example of concept

·        Basic description

Important
As for the logo, we need to almost create a branding guidelines of sorts, to establish our common used typefaces and other structural components.
By establishing this, it will be much easier to lay the rest of the calendar out, once we have already decided on all the details, such as typeface, color palette, etc.

As of know we are just trying to figure out the concept, and what is really going to make this calendar unique.

There is a lot of little technical stuff that needs to be figured out as well…

– Such as the size and layout of the calendar?calendars_sizes

– What majors are going in what months? (Jan-Dec, 2018)
– and why they are relevant to the month that they are in…

(The Majors at CCAD are AdGraph, Animation, Art History, Cinematic Arts, Comics Narrative Practice, Contemporary Crafts, Fashion, Fine Arts, Illustration, Industrial Design, Interior Design, and Photography.)

Production questions…
– Shot in a studio? or on location?
– models?
– who fits the concepts that we have for which majors?

Stay tuned next week to find out more…

(Project 2) New Beginnings… ?

This was a hard project to narrow down to one or two ideas… but here is my favorite concept…

Based on: The Yellow Wallpaper, a 6,000-word short story by the American writer Charlotte Perkins Gilman, first published in January 1892 in The New England Magazine.

The concept is… that we would build a (10-12ft) by (10-12ft) box room of sorts (Big enough to walk into comfortably). With 4 walls, a roof, and a door. This room would also have a light (Tungsten, LCD, other) of some sort dangling in through the top of the ‘room / box.’ (Possibly having some sort of lamp shade, or chandelier like quality to it)

The exterior of the box would be unfinished wood, however the whole inside of the room would be filled with color and vibrancy. So from the outside, it would seem as though a wood box is just sitting in the middle of a room… with a door on the one side of the box.

Sketches 0133.jpgsketches-0135

Two Concepts on what could be inside…
(idea 1)… The inside of the room would be filled with vibrant colors and painting on the walls throughout the interior of the room. (hand paint the interior)

(idea 2)… hang 3 (canvas, other) paintings on the three walls that do not have doors. (paint canvases for the walls)

Key: The concept of the exhibit would be to invoke a sort of claustrophobia inside an exhibit. Creating this larger sense of emotion on top of the art itself.

Jobs….
sketches-0135-job-chart
I forgot to add a antique lamp / chandelier director… and I hadn’t really considered any kind of sound… (maybe silence will be the sound).

Schedule… Of sorts…
sketches-0135-agendaAlso considered having a (shag carpeted, hardwood, tile, wood, laminate, etc.) finish to the bottom of the box.

Tune in next week to find out what spectacular project we end up doing…

Lmao.

(Project 1) Final Three.

Line up…
character-line-up

the-captain-1-copic
I will start with The Captain. An albino human named Kevin. He is a mechanic, with extremely strong gun skills as well as strong robotic mechanics skills… So, to keep people of him in weapon fights, he has his trusty robot (Bot 6.6) for engaging enemies in hand to hand combat, while he can sit back and easily pick off enemies. This goes a long way when you can control a robots movements while fighting (backpack, linked into nervous system or something cool like that).

The outsider 1 (copic) 1.jpg
Next would have to be his robot, Bot 6.6, for obvious reasons. A robot that is controlled by its owner / master through his backpack, that is linked into nervous system. He hasn’t figured out how to give the robot its own persona / emotions of sorts, Kevin is still working out the solution (so that he doesn’t need to control the bot at all).

the-outsider-1-copicLast but not least, The Outsider. Not much has been discovered about his story, all we know is that “Kevin” saved his life when the outsiders village was being destroyed. He has followed Kevin around ever since. Only speaking when necessary, we are still yet to find out much about this character. Seeming human enough (Green skin is interesting), however he has never revealed his true identity to Kevin, as he has never removed his mask and hood.

(Project 1) Continued…

Welcome back…

Nice to see that you have all tuned in yet again for the journey through this menagerie project.

Current Goal: exact character sketches, line sketches, pondering color… etc. etc.

The Captain
As I sketched out, “The Captain.” I thought about what characteristics would make him feel more like a mechanic, of sorts. So I decided to add tools of sorts to his kit. (such as… a hammer, wrench, screw driver, idk, tools…)

So in the like sketch I tried to add a few of these things into the first line sketch. (below)
The Captain (pen).jpg
(The Captain’s first comp | line)

Bot 6.6 (The Captain’s Robot)
I knew that I needed to find a good median of making the bot look robot, while still keeping him in the characteristics of the group (especially with The Captain).Bot 6.6 (pen).jpg
(Bot 6.6’s first comp | line)

The common characteristics… (for the group).
Cloaks
Hats (other than the robot)
Color (color palette)
Mask’s? (Plague mask worn by robot? and the outsider?)

The Outsider
Still trying to figure things out with the outsider, as in what kind of clothing he will be wearing, as well as what he will be using as a weapon.

I think I am leaning towards giving him some sort of mask of sorts, as if it were apart of the culture of his village or for whatever reason. He doesn’t want people to see his face…

I did a quick in location thumbnail sketch on illustrator for ‘the Outsider.’ (below) the outsider.jpg
I haven’t gotten to do a pen based character line sketch yet, so I am going to be sure to try to figure out his exact look, and characteristics (So I can get to creating those outlines).

the-outsider-heads
Also considering the mask instead of the hood… something based on a plague mask might be kind of interesting, like in Bot 6.6’s line sketch. The mask’s were produced and made in the Outsider’s village that was destroyed. The mask Bot 6.6 is wearing, and the (cracked?) mask that ‘the Outsider’ has are the last two mask’s of their kind.

I think that he is very dull at the moment, and I would like to kind of spice him up. In a way… I want to give him a interesting weapon that does not fit a normal “weapon” status… such as, a fishing pole, a walking stick (staff), nunchucks, or a chair (Jackie Chan).

(Maybe something like a fishing pole, that the outsider has figured out how to use as a bow as well)…. something weird like that.

Tune in next week… for more progress on this menagerie project.

(Project 1) Cont… Detail?

Nice to see that you have all joined in once again for the journey through this menagerie project.

Current Goal: Figuring out details, exact character sketches… ect. ect.

Continuing on what I focused on last week, which had to do with more detail. I think I will just be emphasizing more details on the characters. As well as figuring out rough exact character models to move forward onto, looking at other options.

I will start (yet again) with The Captain.

“I will start with the ( leader / commander / captain ) I guess, thats usually how things go. (I haven’t thought of the name yet, so we will call him Kevin just for shits and giggles)…. Kevin is a mechanic, with extremely strong gun skills as well as strong robotic mechanics skills… So, to keep people of him in weapon fights, he has his trusty robot (Bot 6.6 or something like that) for engaging enemies in hand to hand combat, while he can sit back and easily pick off enemies. This goes a long way when you can control a robots movement’s while fighting (backpack, linked into nervous system or something cool like that).” -Me (last post)

I decided not to change many details on the main character of the group. As I feel his clothing, and appearance fit the group. I think that I might consider adding a hammer of sorts, maybe hanging of his backpack.

I have also considered giving him a vehicle of sorts. Matt (Classmate) mentioned it would be cool if he were to be riding a motor cycle or something of that sorts.

Moving onto Bot 6.6

“Next would have to be his robot (Bot 6.6 or something), for obvious reasons. (more sketches)

Bot 6.6.jpg
(even more possible sketches)

I think I am going to merge the sketches above into a bot, that fits what I am looking for.

I still haven’t decided on the weapon that he will be handling, I kind of like the lamp post more at the moment. Then possibly giving him the double swords as if he was “legolas” or something.

Moving onto the last character of the group, The Outsider.

“Last but not least, the outsider. Not much has been discovered about his story, all we know is that “Kevin” saved his life when the outsiders village was being destroyed. He has followed Kevin around ever since. Only speaking when necessary, we are still yet to find out much about this character. The outsider Head's.jpg
(The Outsider’s possible Hood change’s)

the-outsider-stance
(The Outsider’s possible stance/setting)

I liked his overall appearance, when it came to clothing, and kind of mysteriousness about him. The only thing I didn’t like was the hood, as it felt to resemble something too close to that of another artist. So I wanted to stray from the hood like quality beneath the hat, and I want to consider more of a baclava, or a face mask of sorts (even if that ends up being just a cloth of some sort). I want him to have a very abandoned, last of his kind kind of look. As he was found fending of soldiers destroying his village in the mountains. The Captain isn’t really even sure how he found it. As him and Bot 6.6 just stumbled upon a tunnel leading somewhere, and they heard people screaming as the soldiers were killing whoever they had to, to take control of The Outsider’s village.

Sad to say, The Captain was not able to do anything to stop the soldiers from destroying his home. All he could do was ensure, one of their kind had to be kept alive, so a culture would not die.

And thats how The Captain met The Outsider.
(I know, not the best backstory. Deal with it.)

stay tuned for next week…

(Project 1) Finding the Right Fit.

Current Goal – Figure out character mock up (rough sketch), as well as species (a class of individuals having some common characteristics or qualities; distinct sort or kind), and specifics (objects held, weapons, etc…).

As well as how they interact amongst one another (what makes them a strong team), and ability (common uses)  .

(inspiration)
As you all know we as a class went to somewhere quite new for some inspiration, the library (A place I grew very fond of, my freshman year as a commuter). The inspiration I found was not exactly expected however, helpful none the less. I found a book called “Master of the Ice Scene” by Hendrick Avercamp. A very interesting book, as i flipped through it finding scenes of people ice skating on this big frozen pond of sorts. Every character that he placed in his pieces were so different, so unique, all twisting and turning as if the people in the painting actually were moving.

IMG_4526.jpg

The figures of the people are what really interested me. I felt as though the artist gave a really natural life like posture to most of the characters throughout his paintings. So as I studied page to page, I made sure to focus on each of the characters posture, and the movements they were making.

IMG_4527.jpg

Another thing that I was focusing on as I went through these books, was the clothing, and the just the way the artist handled the clothing. The gentle gradation throughout the clothing, as well as the fine cross hatching throughout the piece. I am extremely happy that I actually stumbled upon the book, it has already given me a lot of new ideas. Just about making people have subtle hints of still movement, as well as natural human posture in general.

(my work)

Focusing more on the the concept at the moment as I mentioned earlier…

Purpose / Names
– Bounty hunters (hired gun, Hunters, whatever you want to call them)
– Squad / Team /  – Number, #, 3.812.
– The Exiled.
– The Forgotten.

I will start with the ( leader / commander / captain ) I guess, thats usually how things go.

Still working out details with the robot, haven’t decided on much on the robot.

Let me know what you think would be cool for this set of characters!

and obviously stay tuned for next week.
